Week 1 - Ecology and Change in Salt Marshes
This week we will read and discuss seminal papers in salt marsh ecology and how salt marshes are changing with warmer temperatures. We will also complete field work on salt marshes at the Plum Island LTER and locally at the Little Sippewissett salt marsh near WHOI.

Week 2 - Spatial Dynamics of Kelp Forest Ecosystems
This week we will read and discuss papers on kelp forest ecosystems and how we use different types of remote sensing imagery to uncover spatial patterns in the drivers of giant kelp. We will also complete subtidal kelp mapping using hyperspectral imagery in the Gulf of Maine and explore concepts for mapping surface canopy kelps using satellite imagery.
Carr & Reed 2013
Graham et al. 2007
Bell & Siegel 2022
Week 3 - Foundations of Intertidal Systems
This week we will read and discuss papers on rocky reef intertidal systems (and one sandy beach paper). You will also learn how to search for papers on Google Scholar and pick your own paper to read. At the end of the week, we will travel to Allen Island, Maine to join in intertidal surveys using traditional quadrant methods as well as collect mutlispectral and thermal imagery of the rocky intertidal system.

Menge 2000
Walter et al. in review (will share by email)
*Google Scholar exercise* You each choose a recent paper that cites one of these two foundation papers. Please share your chosen paper with each other and read + discuss both.
